SharedFolderSharedFile

Here is a link that should get you started - http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/05/19/how-to-share-files-and-folders-in-ubuntu/

This one relies on apt-get to install samba - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202605

Create a shared folder

Create a YourNamesSideProject document for each 0person in the partnership

Name it YourNameSideProject.odt (ZachXSideProject.odt for example)

Write a short passage (1-2 paragraphs) about your idea for a sideProject

If you haven't yet shared a folder, you will get a message about sharing

Click both the unix and windows (SMB) networking

Download the needed files.

When you have your folder shared, you should show up among the list of computers on the network

Find the shared Folder on Connors-Desktop

Find the document in it Called SideProject.odtCopy the document to your computer.

On your computer, add your project ideas (keep it realistic and appropriate)

Add your possible SideProject to the list

Each person in the partnership should add their own side project

Copy your side project documents to the shared folder on Connors-Desktop

11-7-07

Side projects

Working with the course's ideas outside of class is essential to integrating the information of the course. You should be already finding computer projects that need to be done, or ones that you want to do. People are probably asking you for help with their computers. In order to recognize these side projects, you should create some documentation for them.

Create a wiki page for each side project. If you have a lot of them, you may want to make a SideProject page to list them all on. Periodically, you should show off your project to the class and teacher.

Screenshot

Go to the applications menu, choose accessories, take Screenshot. Add the shortcut to your top menu bar, use it to take a shot of your desktop.

80Pentium3s

Create a documentation page for this project,

list out the things you have done.

Include screen shots of what you have done

apt-get

APT stands for Advanced Packaging Tool. It is used to get software, which is organized in packages and stored online. Through APT, you can specify the software or package and it will be automatically downloaded. When you do this, apt will ask you for your admin or root password.

Here is some more info on APT and apt-get:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apt-get

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/

Run these commands to get things up to date:

upgrade apt-get

sudo apt-get update

upgrade your distribution

sudo apt-get dist-update

What is sudo?

sudo is like being a super user. You can get access to the administrative side of your linux computer with sudo. With sudo, you can add and update software securely. You are basically at the highest level of access with the machine. Sudo should also work with mac osX and newer systems.
